In the “ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT of Evangelos Pavlidis, student of the 3d grade of the 1st Primary School of Rhodes, School Year 1951-52”, one can read the following questions answered in the elegant handwriting of the teacher: Q. Is he whimsical? What qualities does he possess? What faults? Is his imagination developed? Much. Does he use it appropriately during class taking imaginary trips etc? Does he draw freely? Does he respect his elders? Does he obey the school officials and the rules of the school? Does he have self confidence and courage or is he coward? Do you perceive a special talent in him? Does his intellect develop alongside his body? Is he intellectually normal, is he behind, or is he advanced? His talent in drawing that was manifested so early in life -combined with the other traits of his character- earned him in the years to come not only praise but also reprimand and punishment. Todate, no schoolteacher has been known to appreciate being caricatured, in notebook or blackboard, by one of his pupils. Still, it was those very talents and traits that later led the pupil Evangelos to become cartoonist Vangelis. To serve, in other words, the most impertinent and irreverent of the arts -an art that aims directly at the very heart of authority, any authority. In 1971, at the heart of the seven-year period of military dictatorship in Greece, having found in politics (or so he thought at the time) the answers he was looking for during his hippy days, he embarked on his career as a cartoonist, first with the sports OMADA and soon after with the Athens newspaper TO BHMA (TO VIMA). Since 1983 he has also been active as illustrator, mainly of children's books. In 1987, with the assistance of his four year old son Savvas he wrote and illustrated the “Stories from the Lighthouse”. In 1999 his book “Rhodes1309-1522: a Story” was published. His political cartoons have been published in four collections. He has exhibited solo in Oslo 1978, Athens 1987, in the Museum of the Order of St. John, in London 1999, in Rosas, Spain 2000, in the Museum of Contemporary Greek Art , Rhodes 2012 and various Greek cities. He has participated in many exhinbitions, for cartoons and book illustrations, the world over and has won prizes and distinctions. In 1976, in a survey conducted in 78 countries by the Museum of Humour and Satire of Gabrovo, he was included among the “100 best contemporary cartoonists”. In 1990 together with another 49 cartoonists he was selected by the WILHELM BUSCH MUSEUM of Hannover, for the exhibition "KARIKATUR-EUROPAISCHE KÜNSTLER DER GEGENWART". As an honorary guest he has participated hors de concours in the 8th Gabrovo Biennial, 1987, in the 1992 Salon de Caricature in St. Esteve, France, in 1994 in Ruthdrum, Ireland, in the exhibition "East meets West", Gabrovo 2008 and in Amadora, Portugal 2010. He was a member of the Jury in Skopje 1983, Istanbul 1993, Rhodes 2002, 2004, 2006 and President of the Jury in the exhibition "Art and TV", Athens 2008. Works of his can be found at the Museum of Humour and Satire, Gabrovo, the Gallery SAMLUNG KARIKATUREN, Basel, the Museum WILHELM BUSCH, Hannover, the Museum of Contemporary Greek Art, Rhodes and private collections. In 1994 he was on the Honorary List for Illustration of the International Board of Books for the Youth (IBBY), receiving his honorary prize in Seville, Spain. In 2002, he was honored by the International Center for the Preservation of Architectural Heritage (CICOP) for his book “Rhodes1309-1522: a Story”. In 2010, on the occasion of the celebrations for the 100 years of the Portugese Republic, he was honored at the Amadora International Comic and Cartoon Exhibition as a cartoonist "representative of the oldest Democracy in the World". In 2012, the Mayor and the Museum of Contemporary Greek Art of Rhodes honored him for his "international artistic contribution". He is a member of The Union of Journalists of Greece, the Greek Cartoonists Association, the Chamber of Visual Arts of Greece, the Association of Children’s Books Illustrators, and the Federation of Cartoonists Associations (FECO).
